Underfall Yard

Bristol

At Bristol’s historic Underfall Yard, a former stable building was sensitively converted for the Severnside Sub-Aqua Club. Set within the revitalised Victorian harbour, designed by Jessop and Brunel, this project honours the Listed industrial heritage while providing modern facilities, supported by The National Lottery Fund.

Underfall Yard, Harbourside, Bristol: A Historic Conversion:

Our project at Bristol’s iconic Underfall Yard involved the careful conversion of an old stable building into a new home for the Severnside Sub-Aqua Club. This scheme is nestled within the revitalised Victorian harbour, an area of immense historical significance, and was proudly supported by The National Lottery Fund.

Underfall Yard itself boasts a remarkable heritage. Originally designed in 1809 by William Jessop as a critical component of Bristol’s Floating Harbour, its purpose was essential for clearing silt from the River Avon, which had long hindered navigation. The site’s engineering marvels were later re-envisioned and improved by none other than Isambard Kingdom Brunel in the 1830s.

Today, Underfall Yard remains a vibrant collection of Listed buildings, featuring working Victorian machinery and a distinctive Power House with its unique chimney. This rich historical backdrop provided an inspiring setting for our work, creating a functional, modern space for the Severnside Sub-Aqua Club while respecting and contributing to the enduring legacy of Bristol’s harbourside. The project stands as a testament to thoughtful adaptation within a living piece of industrial history.
