The Round House, Thornbury: A Unique Circular Design
“The Round House” in Thornbury represents a significant architectural achievement by LFL Design, delivering a truly unique, individually styled detached home. This project embraced a striking circular design, integrating soft curved walls, high ceilings, and split-level, open-plan living accommodation.
Notably, the site lies just a stone’s throw from Thornbury Castle, a Grade 1 Listed Ancient Monument. The thoughtful juxtaposition of this ultra-modern design alongside such historical context was not only welcomed but commended by the planning and conservation teams at South Gloucestershire Council.
The design features a dramatic entrance via a reception vestibule leading into an atrium with a circular glass roof. From this central point, curved hallways lead to three bedrooms. The main living space includes a feature Montana Leger cut stone chimney wall with a ‘see-through’ fireplace. Innovative use of levels sees a mezzanine study overlooking the Italian-designed kitchen/dining room, which boasts double-height ceilings and opens onto hardwood decking.
Beyond its distinctive form, the property incorporates modern comforts like underfloor heating, walnut engineered flooring, and double glazing, set within a spacious plot with ample parking. “The Round House” is a prime example of how thoughtful design can transform a vision into an exceptional and memorable home, even within sensitive historical landscapes.
